Solid foods now given to Duminda Silva

Doctors have begun giving solid foods to MP Duminda Silva, who has been injured in the Mulleriyawa political gunfight.

He was given yoghurt and the ventilators and other life support systems have been removed from him, said director of Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital Dr. S. Gamage.

The MP is now able to identify people and to respond to the doctors, he said.

However, he is not still in a condition suitable for being taken overseas for treatment, said Dr. Gamage.

No passenger buses in southern expressway

The government has dropped a plan to deploy passenger buses in the Southern expressway, due to be opened next month.

Highways minister Nirmala Kotalawala said no state or private buses would be allowed on the expressway.

According to him, passenger safety has to be considered as buses in Sri Lanka are not up to standards to travel at high speeds on an expressway.
